3rd Grade Field Trip

The third grade enjoyed hiking several miles of nature trails at the Houston Arboretum on Monday. This trip was characterized by an apparent absence of wildlife and birds due to the sounds of an entire grade's worth of boys combining an exploratory spirit with the rowdiness of pirates eager for a brawl.

What wildlife we did see was either at a distance, as was the case of several larger birds such as eagles, vultures, and hawks, or quite literally the tail end of the beast as it fled from the impending onslaught of boys with walking sticks that doubled as swords, spears, or machetes. The boys enjoyed balancing on several logs spanning what to their minds were huge ravines and gorges and trying to make it into a king of the hillesque type game, finding several large spiders, and turtles along the hike.

Following our time at the arboretum we went into Memorial Park where we enjoyed a relaxing lunch in the shade of Saint Theresa's Catholic Church and had the most exhilarating 3rd grade kick ball game ever, equaling in suspense the recent Astros/Red Sox games that have seen such incredible comebacks. It was competition par excellence as the teams battled for victory in a game that will be remembered into eternity with diving catches, fights with the umpires, fights among the teams, a real life cheering section made of local passers by and joggers, who sensing a battle worthy of the titans, paused, and taking respite, and placing their bets, took the time to cheer the boys on in the heady battle of wills.

However, as in all competition, one team prevailed, and the other went home sad dejected at the loss but energized by the appeal of air conditioned vans and an evening with little or no homework.
