Burning Up the Turf!

Johnny Hebert (’22) tore it up on the football field in his Junior year this year at Strake Jesuit. John ended the year as the #1 high school yard-rusher in Texas and #2 in the nation, gaining a whopping 3,532 yards this season, over 200 yards per game!

Before the playoff games, a sportswriter in the Houston Chronicle wrote, “The star of the show for Strake Jesuit has been junior running back John Hebert, who’s rushed for 2,708 yards and 28 touchdowns (at the time). He’s enjoying one of the most productive rushing seasons in Houston high school football history. There have been 56 seasons of 3,000-plus rushing yards on record across the state, and Hebert needs just 292 more to join that exclusive club." (Which he did!)

Mike McBride coached John in football, saying he “was strong, even in 6th grade, he played Varsity, he was fearless. He was a player you use to ‘make a statement’ on the field. In his 8th grade year, the boys won the Lower Division Conference for first time.” At Western, Johnny also played soccer (8th) and basketball (7th) as well as Football and Track. In Baseball, “John threw hard for us as a pitcher, and also played one year of basketball in 7th grade. John did well at forward on Varsity but switched to soccer for 8th grade.”

In Baseball, “John threw hard for us as a pitcher” says McBride. “Johnnie played one year of basketball in 7th grade and did well at forward on Varsity, but switched to soccer for 8th grade.”

Soccer coach Mr. Greg Henderson, remarked, “John hadn’t played soccer since he was little, and when he joined the team in 8th grade, he just killed it for us, such a force out there!”

Off the field, John’s 8th grade Housemates elected him Raven House Captain. He also excelled academically. Mr. Dan Callahan, John’s 8th grade teacher, commented that “John was a leader who led by silent example. He worked well and was good at sports, and everyone respected him.”
